Divorce Support FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Â
Q: Are you a lawyer, and can you help me fill out my divorce papers?
A: No. Tri-State Divorce Companion is not a law firm, and we do not provide legal advice, legal strategy, legal representation, or document preparation. We can point you directly to official state court resources, help you organize your personal information and files, and provide practical and emotional support as you move through your uncontested divorce process as a self-represented litigant.
Q: How can a Divorce Companion help me if my divorce is uncontested?
A: An uncontested divorce can still feel overwhelming. There may be paperwork to organize, appointments and deadlines to keep track of, personal information to gather, and a courthouse experience that feels unfamiliar. A Divorce Companion provides non-legal, non-clinical support to help you stay organized, focused, and grounded throughout the process.
Q: Can you actually come with me to the courthouse on my hearing day?
A: Yes, where courthouse rules and circumstances allow. A Companion can provide practical and emotional support before and during your courthouse visit. We can accompany you through the process, wait with you, and remain with you in areas where companions are permitted. We cannot enter restricted areas, sit at an attorney's table, speak to the judge on your behalf, or provide legal representation.
Q: I am terrified about transitioning to financial independence. Can you help me handle the money panic?
A: Yes. We can provide non-clinical emotional support and practical organization when the financial side of separation or divorce feels overwhelming. We can help you organize the information you already have, identify practical tasks and questions, and break the process into manageable steps so you can feel more prepared and focused. We do not provide financial, legal, investment, or asset-division advice, and we do not create financial plans or make financial decisions for you.
Q: I don't live in South Carolina. Can I still work with you?
A: Tri-State Divorce Companion is expanding its regional network beyond South Carolina. Depending on where you live and the service you need, support may be available in your area. Our services are non-legal and non-clinical and focus on emotional support, practical organization, and courthouse accompaniment where available. Contact us to learn whether we currently serve your area.
Q: What happens during a Free Clarity Call?
A: The Free Clarity Call is a brief, 15-minute phone conversation where we learn where you are in your uncontested divorce process, listen to what you are currently dealing with, and help you identify the type of support that may be most appropriate. You do not have to have everything figured out before the call. The goal is to help you leave the conversation with greater clarity about your next step.
Q: What can I expect from a Divorce Companion?
A: Your Companion provides non-legal, non-clinical support based on the service you select. Depending on your needs, that may include emotional support and grounding, practical organization, scheduling and reminders, help organizing information you already have, or courthouse accompaniment where available. Your Companion does not provide legal advice, financial advice, therapy, or legal representation.
Q: Can I work with the same Companion for future sessions?
A: Yes. When scheduling ongoing support, you may request the same Companion when that Companion is available. If your preferred Companion is unavailable, we can help you identify another available Companion.
Q: Do I need to know exactly what I need before I contact you?
A: No. You do not have to have everything figured out before reaching out. A Free Clarity Call gives us an opportunity to understand where you are in your uncontested divorce process and what kind of non-legal, non-clinical support may be appropriate.
Q: Do you provide financial or legal advice?
A: No. We do not provide legal advice, legal strategy, legal representation, financial advice, investment advice, or asset-division advice. Our role is to provide practical organization and non-clinical emotional support while you handle your own legal and financial decisions or work with the appropriate professionals.
Q: What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?
A: Because appointments are reserved specifically for you and Companions set aside dedicated time for each session, we require at least 24 hours' notice if you need to reschedule. When the required notice is provided, you may reschedule your session for another available date without a rescheduling fee. Cancellation, refund, and package policies apply according to the terms provided when your service or package is purchased.
Q: How do I get started?
A: The easiest place to start is with a Free Clarity Call. It gives you an opportunity to tell us where you are in your uncontested divorce process, what feels most difficult right now, and what kind of support you may need. From there, you can decide whether one of our services or support packages is right for you.
